Singer Chris Brown could possibly face up to 9 years in prison for allegedly assaulting and uttering threats to his rumored fiance Robyn "Rihanna" Fenty. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30am (Sunday February 8th) on the same evening that the couple was seen leaving the 2009 Pre-Grammy Gala & Salute.
Both parties canceled their Sunday night Grammy appearances, Rihanna was scheduled to perform and both were nominated for awards.
Rihanna allegedly suffered visible injuries and reported the incident to police. The dispute had originated in a vehicle around Hancock Park area and escalated after the vehicle pulled over and the parties got out. Chris Brown, who was not on scene when the police arrived, turned himself in to authorities on Sunday night.
It is rumored to be typical for authorities to book a suspect based on the most serious crime that they can be charged with, in this case uttering criminal threats which can result in a 9 year prison sentence while domestic abuse only results in four years.
